The Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system was established in 2003 to help parents make informed decisions about purchasing video games. By consolidating various national rating systems, PEGI introduced a unified framework now used in over 35 countries across Europe.
Age ratings like PEGI ensure that entertainment content—games, films, TV shows, and mobile apps—is clearly labelled with a recommended minimum age based on the nature of its content.
But you might be wondering: This is a system made for parents. Why is this relevant to me as an influencer?
These ratings guide consumers, especially parents, in determining whether a game is appropriate for their children.
If you promote or play a certain video game, check the age rating of a game you feature and clearly communicate this fact. That way, you demonstrate responsible online behaviour, encourage safe gaming practices, provide a positive example to children, and support experts dedicated to child safety online.
Here are a few tips and messages you can share with your audience of children and young people:
- Bad behaviour, cheating or offensive language is NEVER acceptable. Encourage them to report such players. Advise children to inform their parents about such experiences.
- Encourage kids to talk to their parents if they encounter any content—images, videos, audio, or text—that makes them uncomfortable.
- Remind young audiences not to share personal details like home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, photos, daily routines, school names, or hobbies online.
- Advise children NEVER to agree to meet someone they only know online without consulting their parents first.
